Retro Glasses: The 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s

Eyewear fashion has shifted back to the 50s, taking cues from the most trendy of cultural societies. The 60s, too. Also the 70s and 80s. Eye fashion has turned back the clock on style to anything but the last 20 years. Why shouldn't it? From chic to new romantic, the past is making a comeback. You'll see it on celebrities' faces and in opticians' offices everywhere.

What’s In:
It's big. It's not exactly earth-shattering since oversized eyewear has been around for a while, but things have changed a bit in the past eight months. Rather than the more traditional sideways ovals that stretch almost ear to ear, elongated ovals are more in right now. It doesn't matter how big you go, just go big.

What’s Out:
It's square. Square isn't cool. Square frames were big in the new millennium, but now they're all changing. Small is out, big is in, square is out, ovals are in. Just avoid the understated square look if you're trying to be fashionable. You're wearing your glasses all the time, so if you want to look trendy, get round frames.

What’s In:
Rims are thick. Rimless glasses were all the rage fifteen years ago, but they're no longer cool. The stylish choice is thick rims that draw attention to your glasses instead of diverting it. Get the thick rims and embrace your eyewear.

What’s Almost In:
Colors/patterns that pop. Here's your chance to really stand out. Although many people are okay with going out on a limb with frame type and shape, many still struggle with bright reds or greens. Too many people grab an understated, barely noticeable pattern, but only the brave reach for those cheetah frames.

In other words, if you think you're capable of handling all that attention, overdo it instead of understate it.
Those fashion experts will thank you, as will your kids in twenty years when they look back on your style.
